Exploring Spring/Summer trends

Exploring Spring/Summer trends

I’ve been doing a fair bit of web surfing lately and looking at some of the new upcoming trends. I don’t think there has ever been quite such a melting pot of trend ideas around as there is now. It was the same last Autumn too and from what I have read the biggest trend there is out there now is individualism….never before have we been encouraged to be our own unique selves as much as we are now and I think it’s great! The trend forecasters have likely been getting most of their inspiration from all the unique street style fashions that they see. There are a lot of looks out there that involve many colours, patterns and textures, and we’re encouraged to pile on the jewellery as well. So if you fancy it why not run with all the maximalism that’s going on too. But if that’s not your cuppa feel free to tone down some of the ideas and do what feels right and comfortable for you. That’s the whole idea….be yourself!

Here are a few of the massive list of trends that are floating around for the upcoming season:

  • Maximal looks.
  • Statement sleeves
  • Waist definition
  • Pattern mixing
  • Texture
  • Floral prints
  • Jumpsuits
  • High waisted trousers
  • Cropped trousers or culottes
  • Trench coats
  • Embroidery details
  • Ruffles
  • Bold stripes
  • Pink
  • Green
  • Tie/strap details
  • Menswear inspired shirts
  • Cut-outs
  • Metallic
  • Sheer panels

I don’t know about you, but I’m enamoured by quite a lot off the list and my imagination for sewing projects could easily go crazy!….Must. Be. Restrained!

Anyhoo, I scoured a few pattern websites and managed to find a few that picked up on just some of the trends or that could be adapted to incorporate them and I hope they might get your imagination going and spark off some ideas too. Here goes:

McCalls 7546 (**update: no longer in print but may be available on eBay or Etsy**)a tie front shirt with some other nice variations too…and for some great statement sleeve options what about the top in McCalls 8161

Vogue 9238 (not available on the main Vogue website, but possibly Amazon or eBay) and McCalls 7538 (again no longer on the main website)  for fabulous ways of combining bold stripes:

Vogue 9243 (may be available on Amazon or eBay)…. is another statement sleeve pattern. I like the princess seaming on this one and there are several gorgeous variations…play around with material combos, sheers, hem trims on the ruffles….so many options! And how about making up a lovely floaty cotton gauze/lawn in the lovely McCalls 7537 dress? So pretty!

Take a look at the pattern collection called Bohemian Deluxe by Burda….I love the jackets, tops and those fab culottes. Also the La Vie en Rose collection by Burda..for lovely summer dresses, pretty off the shoulder tops and a full skirt.

I’m really smitten with this Giselle dress by Style Arc for more of the ruffle trend…I might try this for one of my holiday dresses.

For a great topper how about the Isla Trench by Named Patterns…a fabulous classic trench pattern (I have this on order)…….Or why not try the  Londres trench by Orageuse Patterns….would work so well in a soft drapey fabric for a throw over topper for comfy Spring layers.

And finally, a classic denim jacket pattern that you could embroider and embellish…the Stacie jacket by Style Arc…

The list could really go on and on, but I think I’ll stop there! Wow, this turned out to be quite a long post…but I hope it leaves you feeling inspired. I know I am….now if we could only be sure to get the right Spring and Summer weather for all these great clothes we’d be set…

Thanks Maneera! I had a feeling you might like those striped dresses. Glad you approve of the Giselle too…that may be going to Greece with me this year. 🙂

I love this research; I feel like we can all benefit from the legwork you’ve done; great picks! (Sarah Smith)

Such a great review of current trends! I am in love with McCall’s 7542 (and now 7537 thanks to your post!). 7542 must be extremely popular, I went to purchase it yesterday during a sale but the store was sold out of all sizes.
I’m also loving all the floral denim fabric I’ve seen lately. I bought some floral denim way back in the ’90’s when it was popular, intended to make a skirt out of it, never did, dug it out of my stash (can you ever purge fabric? I can’t!) and recently sewed it up into a nice denim skirt! 20+ year old fabric and it’s current again! YAY!

Thanks Karie! I’m not surprised about 7542, it has such a lovely choice of different sleeve options. That McCalls dress is lovely too isn’t it? Regarding fabric…nope…cant purge it either! I’ve sometimes had fabric for decades too and still ended up using it. Your skirt sounds great by the way.

The wide legged trouser idea sounds great for you Monika…the colour would suit you. Re-the trench…just take the plunge and start slowly…you made a coat, so why not a trench?
