It’s that time of year again when pretty much all of the sewing community joins in Me-Made-May. If you want to know what Me-Made-May is then head over to So Zo blog for all the details. It’s a great opportunity for some wardrobe analysis and navel-gazing as to what we love…or don’t love about our clothes and our style. I joined for the first time last year and loved how it gave me the opportunity to find out what combinations tickled my fancy.
Everybody’s pledge for the month-long challenge is different, though a fair few like myself kept it simple and stated that they will try to wear at least one me-made item per day. I look at it as a way of finding out what I’ve fallen out of love with, what needs altering, what is worn out or is downright uncomfortable. I make a few mental notes about gaps that need filling and how my style may have changed. And in my case…I write a blog post about it 🙂
Wardrobe Analysis and Me-Made-May…musings and outfits:
In this post, I’m going through a selection from the first two weeks because I can already spot a few changes that need making. So let’s take a look shall we?
(Note all items made by me unless I state RTW)
Outfit 1
My Lisette coat (a silhouette that I never used to wear) makes me feel fabulous…a huge success. The sweater is RTW from H&M. The ribbed stretch trousers didn’t get worn much for a year or so and now I’ve fallen back in love with them. The comfortable stretch and high waist mean no fussing with them at all. They will be back in rotation.
Outfit 2
Watercolour print drape-front top and joggers. Both items are really comfy, pass the all day test and get worn a lot. It reminded me that I need to make up my new burgundy fabric in another pair of joggers.
Outfit 3
Boxy Burda top and twill trousers. This was my first time wearing these trousers because I made them at the end of Autumn. I was unsure about the comfort level but they passed the all day test. The fabric is not the best quality though. I suspect they will be weekend wear. I changed the neckline on my top (original version here) and much prefer how this sits now. See the first iteration here. Verdict…thumbs up!
Outfit 4
Same twill trousers and a simple tee in the same fabric as my draped top. Casual outfit and comfy.
Outfit 5
Flounce neck top and lightweight denim culottes. Love this new-to-me combination, however, the culottes were made before I perfected my wide leg trouser fit and they aren’t fitting right around my bottom and I don’t like the bulky waistband….Verdict…unflattering rear view, I need more denim culottes in my life and will make some to replace these.
Outfit 6
White tee and cognac culottes….love this. Another new-to-me combo…a big hit and will wear again. Plus it seems to have got Bilbo’s seal of approval…
Outfit 7
Teal green flounce sleeved top and cream jeans…Adore this combo and got compliments.
Outfit 8
Casual at home outfit. Tube skirt and simple tee. Easy and comfy look that I’ve worn before. Thumbs up.
Outfit 9
White sweater, RTW cropped flare jeans and bomber jacket. The bomber is fairly new and I’m so glad I made it. This is my favourite way of wearing it and it’s a perfect weight for Spring. By the way. I was actually wearing the jeans when I was taking all of these photos, so I whipped them off quickly to take this picture. Of course, the postman decides to knock the door at that point! I quickly hid behind the door as I scrambled into some culottes hanging on the back of a chair to avoid embarrassment… #bloggerlife
Outfit 10
Cream jeans and double layered top…first seen here. This was a great all day comfy outfit. I fear this pink top will be one of ‘those’ tops though…you know…the sort that you’ve only worn for one hour and you already get breakfast down it (so you wear a necklace to hide the mark)…and then you get grease on the sleeve at dinner time. Or is it just me that does that???
Apart from these looks, I wore a couple more combos with some of the same elements that were just mixed and matched, so I won’t bore you with more photos.
Things learned and some thoughts:
- I want to make new denim culottes to replace ill-fitting ones.
- I’m glad I made the grey bomber jacket as I originally meant to sew the fabric into a blazer.
- I don’t seem to wear many skirts or dresses…
- I wore some white jeans that are the same style as the cream and grey ones in the photos, but I seem to have the fit all wrong in the rise and they ride down as I walk…not enough angle in the rear crotch seam and too long in the crotch length at the front. I’m afraid they aren’t fixable. Will donate.
- I have some RTW tees and about three of them( that I wore just at the weekend) make me feel less than fab. I much prefer my me-made tops.
- I donated a me-made floral cropped top (not worn for a few years) and a lacy crochet effect Boho style flared cardigan. I don’t feel like me in bold florals and Boho style is not me at all. No regrets getting rid of either.
- I have a few patterned items in my wardrobe but need to be careful that I don’t add too many more as I enjoy mixing up plains.
- when we had the hot weather about a week ago I avoided wearing a dress that has a ditsy floral sprig print on it. I think the fabric choice was a mistake and as it’s a cotton and linen dress I may dye it.
- I really do think I’m fussy with regards to certain prints. For a print to speak to me it has to be unusual. It’s not something I can put my finger on, but I know when I’ve made a mistake buy….note to self: be very careful what prints I buy.
I think it’s safe to say that taking part in Me-Made-May so far has been really useful and enlightening. It’s been nice to get more acquainted with my wardrobe.
Have you been doing Me-Made-May? Do share your thoughts in the comments, I’m nosy and I’d love to know how you’ve been getting on 🙂
‘Till next time!
PIN FOR LATER!
I have been participating but not publicly or with photos 🙂 I did it last year too (on the sly 🙂 ) and found it very helpful. It launched me into doing this everyday since. I can’t put together an outfit that doesn’t include at least one me-made item which has become much easier having a few more garments to add to the mix. I did (like you) learn more about what I wear and why which has resulted in a much better targeted and practical approach to my buying and making which is wonderful!

I know just what you mean Kathleen. I somehow don’t feel quite right unless I’m in all me-made items. It’s such a useful exercise for sure. I’ve had a busy and a stressful few months and now things are a bit more settledI’ve found that it’s great to become more acquainted with my wardrobe and have a refresh. I’m discovering more about my style too. Like yourself, it’s bound to affect my own future makes and new fabric choices. I think we should have a similar me-made month in the Autumn too to spur us on to analyse cool/cold weather wear!
You have beautiful clothes Diane!

Such great flatlays, Di! I love these posts with outfit recaps, so helpful to analyse things. Great choices!

Hehe, thanks Alex…I was up a step ladder to photograph the flatlays with one knee on the top platform. My knee was killing me by the end! I did find it really useful to analyse my outfit choices. I’m still wearing memade until the end of May but I suspect I might be doing a lot of repeats during my holiday so I’m glad I did this post halfway through.
