Once again, time has flown by, and it’s time for another of these biannual posts that I like to share in early Spring and early Autumn. Today, I’m reviewing Autumn trends ’25 for sewing inspiration to start off the new season and maybe help you plan some sewing projects along the way.
For my readers in the Southern Hemisphere, as you head towards your warmer seasons, here’s my previous Spring trends post
Trends Overview
In previous years, there was the so-called quiet luxury trend going on. This season, it seems like the opposite because everything seemed a bit more exaggerated and opulent. Faux fur was everywhere, and some of the animal prints were bold and contrasting in their colours. There were a lot of dramatic-looking coats and many ruffled collars on dresses and blouses, too. I also saw a lot of outfits that bared a lot of flesh…think I’ll be sitting that trend out…
Colours For Autumn ’25
Pantone publishes a range of colours from both London and New York, and each year these are researched by trend forecasters, many months before the runway shows. I see a lot of warmth in the colours of both groups, which makes me happy, but if you’re better suited to cooler tones, this may not be the easiest season to purchase your favourite colours.
Rich camel tones, many shades of brown, purples, damson shades, and pops of red were evident in the offerings from many designers. There were generous amounts of black, too, as lacy goth outfits and the Wednesday Adams influence was featured in a few shows. Overall, I think rich, earthy shades seemed to dominate.

Trends List For Autumn 2025
After trawling through some fashion websites, I gathered together a list of trends that popped up time and again on the runway shows.
There are a few from the list that appeal to me. I wouldn’t mind trying some different sorts of animal print. I love the texture of velvet, drapey and capey outerwear is something I would also try, and touches of lace too. Some of the hip-length jackets with a nod to the 80s also make me think of a jacket that I owned back in the 80s and could easily see myself wearing 🙂 (yes, I’m that old 😉 )
- Country Estate Core. Ladylike and classic
- Graphic slogans
- Stripes galore
- Suits and tailoring again, but no gimmicks, just classic
- Undone elegance
- Faux fur ways way more in the spotlight than in previous years
- Punk with a nostalgic twist
- Lace
- Brown…everywhere
- Pencil skirts
- Transparent/sheer or slinky fabrics.
- Leopard was the print seen everywhere
- Capes and draped outerwear
- Knee-length skirts
- Shoulder definition inspired by 80s silhouettes
- Dark and moody, slightly gothic looks (maybe the Wednesday Adams influence)
- Maxi coats
- Velvet
- Cow, Zebra and snake print
- Romantic, ruffley necklines
- Pops of red
- Purple
- Ladylike outfits like tweed two-pieces and classic Chanel with a twist
- Plaid (as usual)
- slinky slip-type dresses but more opulent than previous years in lace or velvet
Accessories
- Slouchy bags
- Unexpected belting
- Very practical shoes (think school-type shoes)
- Slouchy pirate boots
- Cloche, beret and pillbox hats
Runway Inspiration
I gathered some images together and made a few collages. The names of the designers are under each batch. So many gorgeous coats! Enjoy…

Sewing Pattern Inspiration
I’ve picked out a few patterns that emulate some of the trends, though obviously more from each company will be released as the season gets going.
First up is Vikisews. They always seem to be ahead of the curve with their designs and it was easy to find some examples. Check out their website here

Next is a blouse by Grasser, which highlights the ruffle neck and sheer trends.

Next are some Simplicity designs highlighting the furry maxi coat, the cape influence and a ruffled blouse. Check out the main Simplicity website here

Make this McCalls blouse in black lace, and you have the moody gothic influence sorted.

This New Look coat would work equally well in faux fur or velvet. If you fancy trying the wider shoulder look, why not pop in some shoulder pads?

And finally some BurdaStyle designs. Check out the Burdastyle website for more ideas

It was fun to gather all of the info for this post and I ended up feeling inspired. Even if I don’t emulate any looks exactly as they are, the ideas are there to percalate in my brain; like plush textures, lace accents, oppulent coats etc. I bet you already have some patterns in your stash that you could adapt or maybe some fabrics that could be paired with others in a different way to your original ideas. Most of all just treat it all as fun and if trends arent for you, then that’s fine. To be honest anything goes these days and individual style is ultimately more important than trends. Let me know your thoughts in the comments and if you read this far, thank you! I really appreciate you visiting my blog x
See you soon!

I love the colours and the shapes! I already have some of the patterns in my stash!

That’s great Eleni! Yes, me too, some great colours and shapes 😍
Always look forward to your trend posts, Diane and this one does not disappoint. I love the colors this season but I always gravitate to warm tones and Poppy Red is my favorite!
I’m there for the lace looks and I have a gorgeous piece waiting for the perfect style.
That Chanel organza two piece look is to die for!!
Thanks for all the work you do researching each fashion season! I appreciate your effort!

Thanks Karen! So glad you’ve enjoyed it. There really are some fab looks. Agree about the Chanel two piece, so good.
Diane, Always enjoy Your Trend reports. I pick out a few details I can add to my current wardrobe and colour options. Capes are showing up everywhere. I love them but not sure about the style on me. Concerned I would look shorter, wider.
A trip to the Shopping Mall and a try on is needed.
Drawn to the short Black velvet jacket and have a similar pattern.
Thanks for the inspiration always appreciated. Pat B

Thanks Pat, so pleased you enjoyed my post. That’s a really good idea, to try some RTW clothes on in the shops to see if you like the style before committing to a make.
A very enjoyable read as always. Thank you and you have given me some food for thought for some of my patterns. Happy sewing and I can’t wait to see what you make next.

Hi Diane. I always love these posts. I had a bit of a trawl around shops in Granada yesterday and I saw a lot of classic tailoring plus tailored styles in denim. Lace accents were everywhere and brown! Which i like.
Thanks for researching and sharing this post.

Hi Suzy! Lovely to hear from you. It sounds like the trends are already hitting the shops in Granada. I love brown too and tailored denim sounds fab…count me in xx
Another lovely post, thanks for all the research you put into these. Love the Autumn colour palettes, must have something in my stash. I have the Burda Twinset patter and really want to make it this year. Look forward to seeing your Autumn makes this year.

Thank you! I’m pleased you enjoyed this post. They are, lovely colours this season.
Hi Diane, Thanks for this excellent Fall forecast. I was TOO busy sewing for a black-tie wedding (and then packing for a long trip + cruise) in latter September to look ahead then. I pulled an ‘all-nighter’ (do you have a British English term for this?!) to pack and hem a RTW top after completing my embroidered mesh-over-satin long skirt — I am definitely too old for such hijinks. I must manage better in the future!
I love the Simplicity shawl collar coat, and in a furry fabric, it reminds me of Max Mara’s Teddy Bear line. I also love that cape, and tried on a similar Max Mara cape/jacket in a gorgeous cashmere / wool while visiting Montreal (loved it, but thankfully avoided that splurge purchase). I also love the Burda Tippi suit (particularly the jacket) and the little black velveteen jacket — the cleaner lined styles, of course!
Enjoy your Fall and hope you do some great sewing!

Wow, you’ve been busy Joan! We also use the term ‘all-nighter’ and another one that’s similar is ‘burning the candle at both ends’. Either way I’m glad you finished your outfit in time and that you weren’t too tired. By the way it sounds fabulous with the mesh overlay.
I’m glad you enjoyed my browse through the new trends. I agree about the Max Mara likeness of that Simplicity coat and also love a lot of the clean lines in some of the runway styles. There were many very wearable looks for a change. I’m currently thinking about my next project which might be some more Style Arc Sage pants also a couple of print blouses of my own design.
