A Quick Update
Hi! I thought I ought to write a quick update for you all because it may be some time before normal service is resumed here on my blog. More on that in a minute…first, a little backstory. A few weeks ago, renovations started on our kitchen and hallway. It was a very cluttered and disruptive time, so not a lot of sewing happened, but everything was going great. A week into all of that, I attended Welsh Frocktails in the UK, which was fantastic, and I hope to share all about my outfit at some point. Then it was back to more kitchen upheaval, followed by a lovely short vacation in Tenby in Wales.
The kitchen was looking fabulous, and we had reached the final stages of having the flooring done when disaster struck, and this happened π

I stepped on a patch of wet glue on the kitchen floor just as the floor fitter had stepped out of view for a split second (he would have warned me otherwise). I couldn’t tell the floor was wet, and I fell, breaking my wrist badly. Several days after the accident, I had to have surgery, which involved having a metal plate fitted to secure the fracture. But hey, I’m bionic now! So here I am at the start of a long road to getting the use of my hand and arm back.
I’m right-handed, so as it’s my left wrist that’s injured, I can at least do basic tasks albeit rather slowly, but proper sewing is out of the question, and I’m absolutely gutted because I was so keen to get the house back all tidy and to enjoy making some Summer clothes. So unfortunately, it’s going to be a while before I can blog about some fresh new makes, but I may be able to put together a few different sorts of posts π
And in the meantime, Molly is keeping a close eye on her mama while she recovers…

I’ve got a blouse and a kaftan finished from before all of the kitchen makeover and my accident. Perhaps I’ll do a blog post with them being modelled by my fabulous dressform Frida if that’s ok with you?
I do, however, have one small make to show you right here and now that I made a couple of weeks ago, and it was a fun and quick commission for a client. It’s a clutch bag made in Liberty print fabric. She’d bought some Liberty print trainers and got this fabric to match them. I used a thick Pellon interfacing and found the zip and lining in my stash. I didn’t use any particular sewing pattern; I just used a rectangle made to fit the zip. It all went together in an afternoon, and I’m happy to say that my client loved it.

I’m sorry that this hasn’t been my usual sort of blog post, but on a positive note, why don’t I end with some pictures of beautiful Tenby in South Wales UK? We were blessed with amazing weather!

Isn’t it a pretty place? I highly recommend a visit.
Thanks for reading my friends, and in the meantime I’ll have a chat with Frida to see if she’s up for a modelling job π
See you soon!

Hello from the west coast of Canada ππΌ

Take care.

Thank you Jaclyn. So kind of you xx
Hi Diane,
Glad your kitchen has gone well, but sad about your wrist! I hope this injury wasnβt made worse by osteoporosis.
Molly has a lovely face and Tenby looks charming.
I did see your fab Frocktails outfit on Instagram β wow!
Hope you are back sewing soon. Meantime, enjoy your summer!
Author
Hey Joan, thanks! Well, I guess there’s no way of really knowing if the Osteoporosis made it worse, but maybe I wouldn’t have needed a metal plate if I didn’t have bone problems…
Meantime, I’ll be counting down the weeks until I’m free of a plaster cast.
Diane, Sorry to learn about Your fall and wrist damage. Wishing You a full recovery and glad it was Your left hand. Your pictures of Tenby were lovely. Take care.

Thank you so much, Pat. I feel the same…soooo glad it wasn’t my dominant hand that got injured. Small mercies eh?
Againβ¦so sorry about your wrist. Heal quickly! Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery! Thanks for a glimpse of what looks to be a beautiful place! Must have been a peaceful vacation! Your liberty bag is lovely. What a fun idea to match it up with shoes! I love sewing small projects and find it very satisfying. Hugsπ

Thanks lovely xx. It was a peaceful vacation, such a picturesque place and full of history too. Glad you like the fun little clutch as well. I loved sewing that up.
Hi Diane so sorry about your wrist wishing you a speedy recovery. I broke my right wrist a few years ago very frustrating. Near the end of my 6 weeks in plaster I got my daughter in law to do some cutting out for me. Poor girl sheβs not a dress maker. Just to make you smile donβt wear your best panties I ended up with holes in mine by constantly pulling them up with one hand in the same area π

Thanks so much, Elizabeth. Haha, too funny…I’ll be sure not to wear my best undies π
Hi, Diane:
I was sorry to hear about your fall and wrist injury. It was at least fortunate that you are right-handed.
I peeked at a video from Welsh Frocktails and saw someone who looks like you in a beige/brown dress with a lot of ruffles on the bodice. It would be great to hear about your dress and the Frocktails party.
Take care,
Marjorie

Thank you Marjorie. Yes, definitely, I’m so thankful it wasn’t my right wrist.
Ooh, that might have been me on the video, I had a bronze brocade asymmetric top with ruffles worn with palazzo pants, so perhaps it was my top you spotted. What a great night that was π
Wishing you a speedy recovery so that you can back to the sewing you love.

Thank you Chris! I can’t wait to sew again, but you can guarantee there will be lots of planning for when I can xx
Hi Diane
Sorry about your wrist, not being able to sew I know what that feels like. I have been waiting for cataract surgery since last September, so havenβt been able to see properly for all that time, now scheduled for next week so my pile of sewing will now be tackled.hope your break heals well, take care of it and you, Roswyn
Author
Hi Roswyn, so nice to hear from you. I bet you’re relieved your cataracts will be done soon. I’m sure it’ll make a huge difference. Thanks for the kind words, take care xx
Hi Diane
Sorry to hear about your accident. I broke my left wrist by wringing a dish cloth, I had a cast on for six weeks , couldn’t drive, couldn’t sew!! But I did, I managed to manoeuvre my left arm (the cast wouldn’t go under the machine) but I could use my fingers to hold fabric. I was determined. I was so looking forward to having the cast removed when the hospital rang and changed my appointment for the following week!! I cried.
Hope you heal well, you’ll be back sewing in no time. xxx
Author
Hi Andrea, oh gosh, sorry you went through the same situation. I’d have cried too if my cast removal had been put off for a week π
At the moment it’s early days for me and the fingers on my left hand are stiff and swollen…I am trying to move them to help circulation though. After my 2 week check, I go into a different cast or a splint, so maybe I could get a bit of movement and use back in those fingers, you never know…
Hi Diane, ohh, so sorry to hear about your fall and wrist injury! Maybe time to study a sewing book or class? I’m in a similar situation now, although starting week 7 after left rotator cuff surgery May 5 after falling in January. Big sling like yours — but I can remove it when in the house, as long as I keep my arm supported and move my hand only in front of my mid body, carry almost nothing. Luckily, I can knit! And had a 2 color sweater ready for the single color below the yoke. (I knit with the throw method.) And can cut out fabric with a rotary cutter as long as it is simple lines, so I have 4 things cut for when I can sew. First time for batch cutting! Also I can needlepoint. Good luck, and we’ll welcome Frieda.π
Thanks for the photos! Looks like a wonderful time and place!

Cheers, Heather! It was such a lovely vacation.

Hi Heather. It’s rotten luck eh? And you’ve been through a similar situation too. Sorry to hear that, but I’m glad things seem to be progressing well for you so far. I’m hoping that I’ll get better use of the fingers on my left hand after my post-surgery check up and cast change on the 26th. You never know, I may be able to do more things, here’s hoping anyway π
Sorry to hear about your accident, Diane. My mum (who is a LOT older than you and also suffers from osteoporosis), broke her wrist really badly nearly 2 years ago. She had to have a couple of metal plates fitted etc. but within a few months her wrist was back to normal and doesn’t trouble her at all. I wish you the same speedy recovery.
Oh and the cat is gorgeous, I’m sure she’s great company:-)
Author
Ooh, thanks Helen, that sounds so encouraging. I’m so glad that your mum made a wonderful recovery after the surgery. It’s so good to know.
Hi there Diane! I am so sorry to hear of your accident – it must be so frustrating! Good time for forming plans and taking things slowly for a while whilst the new renovations are done. How exciting is that!
I enjoy your blogs and the new format is fine. I like your pics of Wales – I live in New Zealand and have not been to Wales but everyone says how beautiful it is there. So pleased you were able to take some time out and enjoy your visit.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and I look forward to your summer makes when you’re more mobile.

Thanks for the kind words Christine. Ohh, I’ve heard that New Zealand is really picturesque with a lot of mountains in some areas. Wales is lovely, but we always joke about how it’s not as lovely when the Welsh rain starts hehe!
Thanks fr the well wishes and I’ll try to be a model patient so as to not hinder progress because I cant wait to be able to sew again π
